During that period of isolation, the land of New Zealand developed a stunning array of both animal and plant life. Notably, New Zealand is home to large number of unique bird species, most of which become extinct after the arrival of humans. Due to the moderate maritime climate around the islands, most of the land in New Zealand is covered in expansive forests. New Zealand is a fantastic country to visit for any nature enthusiast.

Culture

The mostly rural life in early New Zealand has given the country on image of being rugged and industrious. In the early 1960s, however, higher education standards become more prominent and cities started to quickly expand. Urban culture began to take over as most of the citizens currently residing in New Zealand do so in large cities. Even so, the vast majority of New Zealand’s art, literature and film have mostly rural themes.

Parks

New Zealand offers a plentiful amount of national parks, rural areas, and other attractions that are well worth a visit. The Abel Tasman National Park offer golden sand beaches, kayaking and a beautiful coastal biking trail. The Tongariro National Park is known for having three volcanoes, two expansive ski fields, and one of the most popular hiking trails in the whole country. Another scenic area for tourists to visit is the Coromandel Peninsula. This rugged coastline has plenty of beaches and hiking opportunities that is only an hour away from the capital city of Auckland.

Travel Requirements

With a valid United States passport you are able to enter New Zealand for up to three months. However, with exception of Australian citizens and permanent residents, entry as a visitor does not permit employment in New Zealand. If entering as a tourist you must have a return ticket or evidence of onward travel to enter New Zealand. If you do not then you will be required to purchase one at the airport to be allowed to check in. More information about the minimum validity of travel documents is available online. Get an overnight passport if you need one.

Inpatient

One important question is whether or not inpatient care is needed. Some of the things affecting this decision is the severity of the problem, the amount of support available to the patient, the ability to actually follow through with treatment plans, and the amount of money or insurance that is available. Regardless to age, these questions must be considered in deciding the level of care needed.

Factors

Family dynamics and support are important considerations as well. If the family cannot be depended on for support, then the only option left might well be inpatient care. However, with a strong family support system and good counseling, outpatient care might be a good option. There must be a strong commitment by the young person in question, however, for outpatient to work.

Treatment

With the care for the younger person, there are several styles of treatment facilities. There are those that are similar to a boarding school, where the person attends school and receives psychiatric and addiction treatment as well. There are those that are outdoor treatment, or wilderness style treatment programs. These re physically rigorous, using physical fitness as a treatment style. There are those that are more like a spa, or luxury hotel. Some are more like a psychiatric hospital, with strict regulations and medical management.

Treatment

All of these styles are effective in part. Some are more effective for certain people. It largely depends on the preference of the one needing care. Cost is another determinate factor. Preferences of the person seeking care, as well as their ability to tolerate certain styles, should be considered. For example, if a young person has plans to pursue a higher education, then the boarding school style might well be the choice. Other styles don’t focus so much on education, dealing more with emotional aspect. This might cause them to lose some of the educational advantage they need.

Family Dynamics

More intensive care (residential drug program) may be needed if the addiction is severe, if emotional issues are present, and/or if the family is dysfunctional. In this setting, the emotional issues are more fully addressed. In the event of severe emotional involvement, it may be necessary to delay attention to educational or physical issues and address the emotional ones first.

Wilderness Approach

Some persons may benefit greatly from a wilderness or fitness style of treatment. Having to focus on survival, combined with a focus on physical activity, often helps because the attention is on something beside the addicting behaviors. Chemicals are being released in the brain during strong physical activity. These chemicals give a euphoria that mimic addictive substances, lessening their pull.
