Within hours of its release in North America, Buju Banton’s album, Before the Dawn, is already creating waves.

The album, which comes on the heels of Monday’s news of a hung jury in Buju’s drug trial, has debuted at number two on the iTunes Reggae charts for the US market.

On this chart, Bob Marley’s album, Legend, holds the top spot. Other acts holding down places are Hassidic Jew, Matisyahu, Michael Franti and Spearhead and US-based Reggae band, Rebelution.

Described by Gargamel Music as a prophetic project, the album is said to encapsulate the experiences of the artiste who has been imprisoned in Florida since last December on a charge of conspiracy to possess and distribute five kilogrammes of cocaine.

Gargamel Music quotes Buju as saying, “All the songs on this album were written before I and I found I self in this current situation, yet they all speak profoundly to what I and I am going through right now…You might can lock the flesh but you can never lock the spirit of Rasta.”

In an interview with the Jamaica Observer on Monday, Buju’s manager Tracii McGregor was asked whether she felt that the publicity the deejay has received throughout the trial would have a positive effect on the release of the album. McGregor noted that like all Buju’s releases, Before the Dawn was highly anticipated by the Gargamel’s fans.

Already, the track Innocent, is being seen as the unofficial anthem of Before the Dawn, which is Buju’s ninth studio album. The release date for the UK and France is set for next Monday, October 4, the album will be available in the rest of Europe this Friday.

The jury has broken their deliberations for lunch and the courtroom closed in the trial of Reggae singer Buju Banton. The jury will return for their deliberations at 1:00 pm or 12:00 pm Jamaican time.

On the 5th floor of the Gibbons US Court here in Tampa, Buju Banton’s supporters prayed and held hands, while his longterm friend and fellow entertainer Wayne Wonder broke out singing the embattled artiste’s popular hits of the nineties including ‘Serious’ and ‘The Stone Love Anthem’.

“The tension is too thick,” a supporter told the Observer.

Buju is being held in a holding area until the verdict is read.

If convicted, the artiste, real name Mark Myrie, could be sentenced to life imprisonment or slapped with millions of dollars in fines for the charges of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and illegal possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a crime.

He was arrested at his Tamarac, Florida home on December 10 last year, following the arrest of former co-accused Ian Thomas and James Mack, who had been in possession of the firearm for which Banton was jointly charged.

Thomas and Mack have since pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in November.

In a recent interview top dancehall music DJ Bounty Killer indicated that Vybz Kartel is in the line-up to take the song of the year for 2010. Knowing that Bounty Killer is a man who despises the ways of Kartel in almost all his doing, I was a bit surprised that he included Vybz Kartel.
Bounty’s pick however was the Gully Gad Mavado for his song Messiah for song of the year ..because of its melody and strongest of its message.. as you can see i included this song in my polls for song of the year. Bounty also said that Kartel, I-Octane and Mavado are the artiste that the song of the year should come from. …
I indicated some time ago that Beenieman, Gyptian and Khago are just as strong candidates for song of the year and even though i did say Beenieman might take it Khago is quite popular on the streets while gyptian has the “international crowd”
